Eight Steps To Successfully Potty Training Your Puppy
Step 1:Get your puppy out of his crate
It is very important that you always follow the same path, use the same door, when accompanying your puppy to his elimination zone.
That’show you’ll teach your dog to ask you to go out or to go on his own to his toilet stop.
Step 2:Accompany him to his toiletstop.
Why do I want you to accompany your puppy? First, because since your
puppy is on leash and you can control his whereabouts,he won’t do anything else but get down to business.
Second,it is the only way for you to be sure that your dog has completely
emptied both “reservoirs”.Furthermore, since praise is an important step to your puppy’s house training success, you MUST be there to praise him when he does the right thing.
Step 3: DON’T
say a word until he starts eliminating Shhhh…….
Until your puppy starts to eliminate, you won’t say a word. Some of youmay be thinking: “What does it change if I talk to my dog?” First, you don’t want him to get distracted. You brought him out for one purpose: eliminating.
Second, you don’t want to make one of the most common mistakes new owners make: If you were “thinking” like a dog,in other words associate an action with a consequence, here’s the conclusion you would arrive at:when we go out I get all the attention, but the minute I relieve myself,no more attention and back in the house. Dogs are smart, you know. They like the outdoors and would much prefer staying outside then going back in the house. The final result would be a dog that hol
ds it as long as he can so he can stay outside longer.
Step 4: Teaching your Dog to Go on Command
1. Bring your dog to his elimination zone or toiletstop.
2. Don’t say a word.Remember,if you talk and pay attention to him he’ll forget what he’s supposed to do.
3. The moment he starts to urinate or defecate, say your command word in a very soft tone of voice.
4. Once finished, praise your dog lavishly.
Step 5: Praise him like crazy for pooing at the rightplace.
Praises are extremely important when you’re housetraining your dog because that’s how he’ll know that he has done the right thing. Don’t hesitate to praise your dog with a“Goood boy” and “Goood girl” everytime your puppy does something you like.
Step 7:Play with your puppy a couple of minutes atleast.
Dogs like to play.Nothing makes them more happy than playing with you. If you play with your dog, even if it’s only for a couple of minutes,AFTER he has eliminated,he’ll relieve himself a lot faster.
Step 8:Bring your puppy back to his crate
Hmm Thats it! See the Magic From the Next Time, I bet your puppy will love to eliminate now.
